The Norton Energy Community

Origin Energy have now submitted the planning application for two wind turbines for the Parish of Norton.

Origin Energy have submitted the planning application for two 2.5 MW wind turbines for the Parish of Norton. This follows a 2 ½ year preparation of an Environmental Impact Assessment. The documents were submitted to Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council on 13 August 2012.

There will be a process of validation of the documents, which is expected to last 10 days and then a consideration of the contents in the following 16 weeks. Doncaster Planning Department will give their opinion of the project but the decision to grant the construction will be decided by a planning committee of councillors.

The turbines would be operated on a community basis, which means that the profits from the sale of the energy through the National Grid would be given to Norton Energy Community. NEC is a co-operative and all households are free to join for a £1 fee. Already, around 200 households have showed support and we encourage many more to come on board. If you would like to join please contact us through the details given on this website.

This allows participation in the democratic process for making community investment decisions. It is hoped that in the this way the turbines will bring benefits to the Parish over a long period.

Origin Energy will design, finance, build and operate the turbines on behalf of the community. Origin Energy is a community interest company, a special form of company which means that all profits need to be returned to the community. We believe that the environment can be entrusted to communities who have the right will and sufficient resources.

We believe this is an exciting offer and one has not been made anywhere else. It provides the chance for people to positively take care of their local environment and give them the resources to act for themselves. It is a long term project which aims to be more than just building turbines but will instead be of benefit to both community and environment.

The website contains a summary of the project in which you can see the main details. The main technical documents will be made available at the Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council's planning website.

Towards the end of last year, the Advertising Standards Authority ordered the members of the NONOW protest group to stop distributing leaflets that contained certain erroneous ideas and malicious miss-information about the wind project in Norton Parish. It is against the law to publish inaccurate or miss-leading information into the public arena. Their ruling can be found here:

It has recently been brought to our attention that despite this warning the NONOW group are continuing to distribute these leaflets and we would ask that if anyone receives such a leaflet to contact us and let us know.
